About the Author
Richard S. Prather (1921–2007) was an American novelist best known for creating the "Shell Scott" series of private detective novels. Born in Santa Ana, California, Prather served in the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II before pursuing a career in writing. His debut novel, Case of the Vanishing Beauty, introduced the charismatic and wisecracking detective Shell Scott. Over the next few decades, Prather wrote more than three dozen Shell Scott novels, earning a reputation for his lighthearted yet suspenseful storytelling. He also wrote under the pseudonyms David Knight and Douglas Ring. In 1986, he received the Private Eye Writers of America Lifetime Achievement Award. Prather's works remain influential in the mystery genre, known for their engaging plots and memorable characters.
