In The Case for God, Karen Armstrong offers a sweeping historical exploration of humanity's evolving understanding of the divine. From the Paleolithic era through to the present day, Armstrong traces how religious practices—rather than abstract beliefs—have been central to the human quest for the transcendent. She critiques the modern tendency to reduce God to a scientific hypothesis, advocating instead for an "apophatic" approach that embraces silence, mystery, and humility. Armstrong's work challenges readers to reconsider the role of disciplined spiritual practice in cultivating a deeper connection with the divine.

Editorial Reviews

"In a dense but accessible and compelling exploration of premodern and modern religious concepts and practices, Armstrong illustrates the unfolding, reshaping, and overturning of views of God, nature, and reality." —The Christian Science Monitor

"Accessible, intriguing study of how we see God... Armstrong claims that the 'warfare' between science and religion is a myth perpetuated by those with axes to grind." —Kirkus Reviews
