Babette’s Feast and Other Stories is a luminous collection of short fiction by legendary Danish storyteller Isak Dinesen (pen name of Karen Blixen), presented in this Penguin Modern Classics edition. Anchored by the beloved title story—the basis for the Oscar‑winning film about a mysterious French cook who transforms a strict Norwegian religious community with a lavish feast—the collection also features enchanting tales such as “Tempests,” “The Immortal Story,” and “The Ring.” Across these narratives Dinesen blends fairy‑tale magic with profound reflections on fate, sacrifice, art, and human grace, crafting stories that are at once witty, mystical, and deeply humane, and that reveal her mastery of mood and moral complexity.

About the Author

Karen Blixen (1885–1962), who wrote under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen, was a Danish author celebrated for her elegant, evocative prose and her fusion of folklore, myth, and psychological insight. Born in Rungsted, Denmark, she studied art in Copenhagen, Paris, and Rome before living in Kenya, an experience she famously recounted in Out of Africa. Blixen’s short stories — including those in this volume — showcase her gift for blending realism with the extraordinary, exploring themes of destiny, artistry, and the subtle interplay of joy and sorrow. Her work has inspired acclaimed cinematic adaptations and remains a touchstone in 20th‑century literature.
