Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie follows two teenage boys sent to the Chinese countryside during the Cultural Revolution, where their forbidden access to Western stories becomes more than entertainment—it becomes a lifeline. Cut off from ordinary education and surrounded by censorship, the boys discover a secret stash of classic literature and begin “retelling” the books to the villagers, turning stories into currency, confidence, and connection. As they move through hardship, suspicion, and small acts of defiance, their imaginative world collides with love and awakening, culminating in a portrait of how art and storytelling can reshape a person even when everything else is controlled.

About the Author

Dai Sijie is a filmmaker and novelist born in China in 1954. During the Cultural Revolution, he experienced “re-education” in the countryside (1971–1974) before leaving China in 1984 for France, where he has lived and worked. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress was his first novel and became a major international best-seller, later adapted into a film.
