A celebration of two thousand years of Christianity, this wide-ranging history starts with the birth of Jesus and maps out the broad sweep of Christian religion as it has developed through many cultures. The author sets out each period in its historical, political and philosophical context. Lucidly and compellingly written, this sensitive and accessible critique is a mine of information for the non-specialist, while the theologically educated reader will find in it a rare joy and a new clarity of vision.

But AD 2,000 is not the end of history. If, for the historian, the millennium is a platform for looking back at the panorama of the past, it is also a standpoint for looking forward. For those who celebrate the child born in the manger, what will the next two thousand years bring?

Editorial Reviews

"Admirable....eminetnly readable....This is a valuable work, distinguished by fairness and realism." -Karen Armstrong, author of A History of God

"Unlike many books of this kind, this one devotes considerable attention to the development of Christianity in Asia, the Americas, and Africa.  In addition, Edwards takes account of the contributions of women to the development of Christianity, both  in its earliest days and in modern times." -Publishers Weekly

"An informed and balanced account....One can read straight through, or dip into it at various points.  Either way the reader will come away informed and often inspired or challenged." -America

"David Edwards is one of the most remarkable Christian writers of our time, because he combines vast knowledge and clarity of mind, so prolific in production it can leave one breathless, with a practical and pastoral career....Edwards has always remained a pastorally-minded scholar concerned to share ideas as widely as possible." -Adrian Hastings in The Tablet
