Headcrash is a wildly inventive and satirical cyberpunk novel by Bruce Bethke that follows disaffected programmer Jack Burroughs—a corporate cog by day and the online cyber-legend MAX_KOOL by night—as he navigates virtual subcultures, corporate absurdity, and digital rebellion in the nascent world of the InfoBahn. Equal parts sharp comedy and geek-culture commentary, the book skewers genre conventions while exploring identity, technology, and the clash between corporate conformity and hacker ingenuity, making it a must-read for fans of cyberpunk with a sense of humor. Headcrash was first published in 1995 by Warner Books and won the Philip K. Dick Award the same year.

About the Author

Bruce Bethke (b. 1955) is an American science fiction author best known for coining the term “cyberpunk” in his 1983 short story Cyberpunk, giving a name to the transformative subgenre that would be defined by authors like William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. Headcrash (1995), Bethke’s first novel, blends satire and cyberpunk sensibilities, earning the Philip K. Dick Award for best paperback novel. In addition to fiction, Bethke has written extensively in technology and software, reflecting his deep engagement with both speculative narrative and real-world digital culture, and remains a figure of lasting influence in sci-fi and cyberpunk circles.
