Margaret Cavendish’s The Blazing World is one of the earliest works of science fiction and philosophical fantasy, presenting an extraordinary tale in which a woman enters a parallel universe accessed through the North Pole and becomes its empress. Blending political theory, natural philosophy, satire, and imaginative invention, the work challenges 17th-century assumptions about gender, knowledge, and authority. This Penguin Classics edition also gathers selected essays and writings that further reveal Cavendish’s wide-ranging intellect and unconventional voice, making it a foundational text in both feminist literary history and the development of speculative fiction.

Edited with an Introduction by Kate Lilley.

About the Author

Margaret Cavendish (1623–1673), Duchess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was a pioneering English philosopher, poet, playwright, and early science fiction writer. Known for her prolific and unconventional body of work, she engaged deeply with early modern scientific debates while challenging the exclusion of women from intellectual life. Cavendish wrote across genres—including natural philosophy, utopian fiction, poetry, and drama—often blending them in innovative ways. Her work was controversial in her own time but has since been recognized as highly original and influential in the history of literature, philosophy, and feminist thought.
