In The Metal Monster, A. Merritt delivers one of the most imaginative lost-world fantasies of early twentieth-century science fiction. When explorers venture into a remote Himalayan valley, they encounter a terrifying and awe-inspiring civilization of living, shape-shifting metallic entities—beings that combine into colossal geometric forms of radiant, destructive power. Blending speculative science, mysticism, romance, and cosmic wonder, Merritt crafts a visionary tale that explores humanity’s insignificance before higher intelligences while celebrating courage, sacrifice, and the sublime beauty of the unknown. A landmark of pulp-era imagination, The Metal Monster remains a classic of weird science fantasy.

About the Author

A. Merritt (Abraham Grace Merritt, 1884–1943) was one of the most influential American writers of early pulp fantasy and science fiction. A journalist and editor by profession—most notably associated with The American Weekly—Merritt wrote lush, atmospheric adventure novels that blended speculative science with occultism and exotic lost civilizations. His works, including The Moon Pool, The Face in the Abyss, and The Ship of Ishtar, were celebrated for their rich prose, visionary imagery, and grand imaginative scope. Merritt’s fiction helped shape the development of modern fantasy and science fiction and influenced later writers in both genres.
