Iris Murdoch’s The Sea, the Sea follows Charles Arrowby, a celebrated theatre director who retreats from London to a secluded house by the sea after leaving his career behind. There, he becomes consumed by memory, obsession, and self-examination when he unexpectedly encounters Hartley, a former love from his youth. What begins as a planned withdrawal into solitude gradually unravels into a psychologically intense meditation on ego, illusion, love, and the human desire to control others. As Charles documents his experiences in a journal-like narrative, the novel explores the tension between self-deception and moral clarity, set against the powerful and symbolic presence of the sea. The result is a richly layered, unsettling portrait of obsession and the limits of self-knowledge.
