Under the Sea-Wind by Rachel Carson is a lyrical and immersive exploration of ocean life that follows the interconnected journeys of a sanderling, a mackerel, and an eel along the Atlantic coast. Written with a rare blend of poetic prose and scientific precision, Carson paints an intimate portrait of marine and shore ecosystems, revealing the delicate balance and rhythms that sustain life beneath and above the waves. This cherished classic — the author’s first and personal favorite — invites readers to see the sea’s wonders through the eyes of its inhabitants and has inspired generations of nature lovers and environmental thinkers. This Penguin Books edition features an insightful introduction by renowned biographer Linda Lear and evocative illustrations by Howard Frech, all translated and edited by James Strachey in its Penguin Classics presentation, making it both a beautiful read and a collectible for enthusiasts of nature writing and ecological literature.

About the Author

Rachel L. Carson (1907–1964) was an American marine biologist, naturalist, and one of the most influential science writers of the 20th century. Beginning her career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Carson brought her scientific expertise and a poet’s sensibility to works that celebrated the natural world and emphasized ecological interdependence. Her first book Under the Sea-Wind established her as a masterful nature writer; her later work The Sea Around Us won the National Book Award and expanded public appreciation of oceanography. Carson’s 1962 book Silent Spring profoundly shaped environmental consciousness worldwide, raising awareness about the dangers of pesticides and helping to launch the modern environmental movement.
