The Oedipus Plays of Sophocles comprises three celebrated tragedies—"Oedipus the King", "Oedipus at Colonus", and "Antigone"—all translated by Paul Roche in a new and engaging rendition. These plays explore profound themes of fate, identity, and morality through the tragic journeys of Oedipus, who unknowingly fulfills a prophecy of killing his father and marrying his mother, and Antigone, whose fierce loyalty leads her to defy state law for familial duty. Roche’s translation preserves the emotional intensity and dramatic poise of Sophocles’ original works, making them accessible and resonant for modern readers. This edition offers readers the complete texts in a rich and poetic language that highlights the timeless struggles of its characters against fate and societal norms.

About the Author

Sophocles (c. 496–406 BC) was a pivotal figure in ancient Greek theater, revered for his contributions to drama and narrative structure. His notable works, including Oedipus the King and Antigone, are central to Western literature, highlighting the complexities of human nature and moral dilemmas. Sophocles introduced significant innovations to theatre, including the use of a third actor and the expansion of scenic effects.

Paul Roche (1916–2007) was an accomplished poet and translator best known for his translations of classical works, including those of Sophocles and Euripides. His adaptations maintain the essence of the original texts while employing contemporary language, thereby bridging the ancient with the modern.
